Clown Karandash (Карандаш, portrayed by actor Mikhail Rumyantsev (Михаил Николаевич Румянцев)) was a well-known circus performer in Slavic countries, whose faithful companion was Klyaksa (Клякса – from Russian – Blot), a Scottish Terrier. Klyaksa enhanced Clown Karandash’s artistic persona. The name was given by the artist’s wife, Tamara, who thought the black dog on the red circus carpet resembled a black blot.
Clown Karandash performed at circuses in Leningrad and later in Moscow. Films and animations were made about and featuring him, and he authored two books about the life of a clown. Later, he toured extensively and was particularly popular in Odesa (then part of the Ukrainian SSR). Klyaksa had many namesakes in her time, and her image contributed to the global popularity of the Scottish Terrier breed.
